Love Dogs? Raise a Future Service Dog Puppy!
ORGANIZATION: Canine Companions - Northeast Region (Maine to Virginia)
Volunteer to raise a puppy and become part of something truly life-changing! The Canine Companions Puppy Raising Program offers a unique opportunity for volunteers nationwide to contribute to their important mission of providing service dogs to individuals with disabilities.
As a Puppy Raiser, you will:
- Play a crucial role in preparing future service dogs.
- No prior dog experience is necessary—mentorship is available for first-time raisers.
- Typically commit to raising a puppy for its entire journey, with options for co-raising or shorter-term assistance.
- Join an extraordinary community of fellow puppy raisers, volunteers, and graduates.
- Find excellent service project opportunities for homeschool groups, FFA, 4-H, and other community organizations.
Here’s what’s required for the 14-18 month journey:
- Provide a safe and loving environment for a puppy (the only dog under 12 months old in your home).
- Teach the puppy basic manners and skills—training support will be provided! You’ll be part of a supportive network of experienced volunteers.
- Work closely with Canine Companions to monitor the puppy’s progress.
- Cover costs for food, veterinary expenses, and attend an average of two puppy classes per month (either run by Canine Companions or pre-approved classes).
- Transport the puppy to the regional training center at the projected turn-in time.
- Offer age-appropriate socialization opportunities, such as public outings and veterinary visits.
- Keep the puppy on a leash at all times unless supervised in a securely fenced area. Use a kennel or crate for indoor sleeping.
- Supervise the puppy throughout the day; some volunteers may have permission to bring their puppy to work.
